Manjerakar Market

Location: Sion, Mumbai.
Area: 3,00,000 Sq. Ft.

One of the oldest Municipal markets of Mumbai, the redevelopment of the
same came with its own challenges.
From a 100 Sq. Ft. of fish market shop to a 2000 Sq. Ft. of garment shop had to be catered too.
The brief by the shop owners was to develop the market in a way that it looks and feels like a fancy air-conditioned shopping mall.

The challenge in this layout was to accommodate four distinct shopping
typology like flower market, fish market, garment market and general stores
under one structure. More then hundred shops had to be planned for on a
floor of various areas along with space for municipal parking.

A modern facade with metal sheet cladding was designed to keep the
maintenance low.

A triple height entrance lobby with a glass façade and a
skylight was designed to create grandeur and bring in the natural light into the
market space.
A central courtyard atrium was created to retain the essence
of an open market. Thus a modern market mall was created in this project.
